Breeding Resources
GoodDog / AVIDog
GoodDog is an online platform that showcases ‘well-bred’ dogs to prospective buyers. I am not a proponent of their end to end system – it charges the new owner a significant fee, but the educational materials are excellent. As a breeder, you can join their Breeders’ Centre as long as you have an address in the US. They do some preliminary screening to refuse less scrupulous folks membership but it is not onerous.
The GoodDog Good Breeder Centre is jam packed full of amazing information. Much of this material came from Gayle Watkins, a long-time breeder of Goldens. Gayle developed an educational program and an online, “always awake” support group for dog breeders, called AVIDog on Facebook. I think the online group is now closed to new members.
Gayle’s flagship course is called; “Your LItter A to Z” and the curriculum starts from the very beginning. Long before the actual mating she explains how to make sure your dog is healthy and ready for breeding. It covers every step along the way from thinking about possibilities to puppies heading home, healthy and happy. She covers insurance, contracts, diet and supplements, exercise, puppy toys and so much more. Her materials on neonatal care are absolutely the best pre-reading you can do before those pups arrive.
Gayle has had significant health challenges and we are so fortunate that her work is still available to us. If you have cute puppy videos, send them to her on messenger.
